Ashton showed up as scheduled, driving a beautifully maintained truck, and presented himself respectfully, explaining that he was here to have a look at the garage door. He was well spoken, polite, and ready to work. Within a few moments he was in the garage, and checking key elements - track, springs, wheels, and overall mechanism - side to side over each door. My impression was that he was making mental notes of what he was seeing, but within a few moments, but he was also "hands on" with the springs, bearings, tracks... He knew what to look for and was then physically checking some of the parts by hand - how much "play," "how much tension," "too tight, too loose," etc. Then he began describing to me, in general terms, what he was noticing about the doors - things I had never noticed, things that were worn as well as things that were working just right. Next he took a few moments to jot down some notes of things he wanted to go over with me in more detail when I was ready. What gave me confidence in him was how he was going about this: To be certain, he is experienced in garage door repair, but what impressed me was how he went over his notes with me, physically pointing out each of the items that needed replacement, as well as the reasons why. He more or less opened a discussion of what needed to be done, and how much time it would take to do the work. He listened carefully to my questions and he gave me straightforward answers, using the examples of my two doors to point out what was needed on one, by comparing it with the other - showing how things work when they are working properly, and how to get them both into proper working order. It isn't often that a technician can describe things so well - finding the issues, actuating each of the doors to show me exactly what needed replacement, how he would do it, how much time it would take, along with an estimate of how much the parts and labor would cost. And for the parts that showed signs of wear, he prioritized the things that were most important as well as the things that would be needed farther down the road. He was telling me what was needed now, and giving me good options for deciding how much I wanted done now, and how much I could do on the other door later. Before leaving he asked if I had any questions. He gave me a general idea of his work schedule, when he'd be available, invited me to contact him or Ray's Garage Doors again if I had any questions; and then he said that he'd use the notes to provide a written estimate. About an hour later, I received his detailed, written estimate in my inbox. It covered everything he had described to me, along with a verification of the prices he had quoted. I thought to myself, if there was ever a perfect example of how a highly professional technician should make a good impression, Aston is the role model. I have always believed that the people who a company sends out on the job is the best representative the company can have. In this instance, Ray's Garage Doors come out on top.
